Bishop Ward Writing Guide

Reading and writing are skills every student at Bishop Ward is expected to have mastered by graduation. These two skills are not limited to the work a student does in his/her English class, but to every class that is taken. As literate people we will, through our own devices or those of another, read and write for a variety of purposes: in a college course, for an employer, as part of an organization, or just for our own pleasure. Possessing the skills to read a variety of texts and materials and being equipped with the tools to write well are essential to a life of learning and discovery.

A major focus of school improvement in many high schools is “Writing Across the Curriculum.” Simply defined, Writing Across the Curriculum means using the written word to enhance your understanding of the subject you are taking. Research shows that writing improves reading comprehension and thinking skills necessary for mastering a subject area. Therefore, “active learners are active thinkers, and one cannot write without thinking” (Steffens, 1988; Walker, 1988).
