Kylie Burns Signs with University of Alaska Anchorage 



Bishop Ward High School senior Kylie Burns signed to play basketball for University of Alaska Anchorage on May 26. She is pictured here with her parents, Linda and Mike Burns, and Bishop Ward Head Basketball Coach Carlos Williams.

This past season, Kylie averaged about 20 points a game with 6 rebounds and was a leader on the court.

“Kylie is a very talented ballplayer and a determined individual,” Head Basketball Coach Carlos Williams said. “At the next level she will work extremely hard to become a better collegiate athlete. With her work ethic and drive Anchorage Alaska will be pleased with their choice.” 

Kylie has recently received several honors for accomplishments as a girls’ basketball player. Most recently, she was named Kansas Female High School Athlete of the Year in the Kansas City Metro area by the Kansas City Sports Commission.

She also was one of only 23 girls from the state of Kansas to be selected to the national McDonald’s All American team.

Kylie was selected for the Hy-Vee/Pepsi High School All-Star Challenge on April 10 at the Independence Events Center. This event showcases some of the top senior basketball players around the city. The game was featured on Metro Sports cable channel.




Chris Huey Signs with University of St. Mary 



Senior Chris Huey signed to play basketball with University of St. Mary on May 5.

Chris is a 6’4 guard and has played at basketball for Bishop Ward for four years, including two years on varsity. Chris was voted one of two captains his senior year.

“Chris’s height and athleticism will really help him at the next level, as he frequently uses his 6’4 frame in order to get difficult shots off in the lane or to change the shots of opponents,” Assistant Basketball Coach Daniel Reimer said.

Alex Orel Signs with Benedictine College 



Senior Alex Orel signed to play baseball for Benedictine College on April 30.

As a junior, Alex was selected 2nd team all state outfielder by the Kansas Baseball Coaches Association. He was also selected 1st team all Kaw Valley League outfielder in 2009.

This year, Alex is hitting 428 with 15 RBIs for the 11-6 Cyclones.

“Alex has good instincts, along with a strong arm,” Head Coach Dennis Hurla said. “As a hitter, he has the ability to drive the ball to either gap. Alex has a bright future as a college baseball player.”

Aaron Connor Signs with University of St. Mary 



Senior Aaron Connor signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball with the University of St. Mary on April 22. Pictured here (front row, left to right) Bishop Ward Assistant Basketball Coach Daniel Reimer, Aaron Connor, University of St. Mary Assistant Coach Brian Rutz, (back row, left to right) Athletic Director Joel Heider, Aaron’s sister Elizabeth Connor, and Aaron’s parents Ann Connor and Joe Connor.

Aaron is a 6’1 guard and has played for the Bishop Ward varsity basketball team for the last two seasons.

“Aaron is an excellent 3 point shooter and free-throw shooter,” Bishop Ward Head Basketball Coach William Buser said. “He made 86 percent of his free throws this past season.”

Aaron also ran for the cross country team and the track team during his high school career.

 

Zach Nill Signs with Benedictine College 



On Feb. 10, Bishop Ward High School senior Zach Nill signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play football at Benedictine College. Zach is pictured here (front row) with his parents Randy and Diane Nill and (back row) Assistant Football Coach Travis Grosdidier and Head Football Coach Greg Duggins. 

Zach is 6’4 and 225 lb. and has played TE and DE the past two seasons and made every catch he got his hands on this year and was a consistent blocker.

Zach added great strength and depth to the D-line this fall. He attracted interest at all levels-small college, D-II and JUCO in FB and basketball as well. Zach was named All-KVL honorable mention at TE and was an All-Area player at TE.

Zach was also named as the “Cyclone Award” winner this past season by his teammates. The Cyclone Award goes to the student/athlete that best exemplifies true Spirituality, great character and service to others.  



Cole Muder Signs with Fort Scott Community College 



On Feb. 8, Bishop Ward High School senior Cole Muder signed to play football for Fort Scott Community College, which finished 2nd in the nation this past fall. Cole is pictured here (front row) with his parents Nicholas and Angela Muder and (back row) Athletic Director Joel Heider and Head Football Coach Greg Duggins.

Cole rushed for 1,091 yards this year with 13 rushing TDs and a 5.6 yard per carry average this season and was named 1st team ALL-KVL at running back after being selected as 2nd RB his junior year.

Cole has had JUCO, small college and D-II interest with his speed and intensity. He is a three-year starter at TB and three-year starter on defense-converted to Lber this season after playing in the secondary for two years.

Cole has rushed for nearly 2,000 yards in his career. Cole was one of the top 15 running backs in the entire metro area and was 4th in rushing yards in the KVL this season. Cole has an impressive 4.6 40 yard dash time. Cole has had many honors this past season that include 1st Team ALL-KVL and 1st Team All-Area RB and 1st Team All-KVL and 1st Team All-Area as LBER as he lead the Cyclone team with 3 interceptions and 2nd in total tackles and points defensively.



Jenny Schneider Signs with Ottawa University



On Feb. 5, Bishop Ward High School senior Jenny Schneider signed to play softball for Ottawa University. Jenny Schneider has been a varsity pitcher her entire career and also plays third base. Schneider pitched 127 innings her junior season and faced 550 batters. She gave up 107 hits and had 106 strikeouts and only walked 14 players. She posts a 1.5 ERA and only had a 0.187 batting average against her. She was voted to the 2nd team All Kaw Valley league and voted MVP by her teammates. She was a captain her freshmen and junior seasons.

Schneider also helped lead Bishop Ward’s varsity softball team to the state tournament as a Junior, and pitched all three games at Regionals.

Schneider has spent most of her career as clean-up hitter. She led the 2009 team with a 0.333 batting average and had a 0.424 slugging percentage. She also led the team in fielding percentage with a 0.964.

“Jenny Schneider has been an inspirational leader since the first day she stepped on the field as a freshman,” Bishop Ward Head Softball Coach Natalie Muehlberger said. “She is a natural leader and has made our program better just by being a part of it.”



On Feb. 3, Bishop Ward High School senior Dallas Shalz signed to play football for Pitt State University. Dallas is pictured here (front row) with his parents Donald and Cindy Shalz and (back row) Assistant Football Coach Travis Grosdidier and Head Football Coach Greg Duggins.  

Dallas Shalz is a three-year varsity letter winner and three-year starter both offensively and defensively. Dallas was recruited by many D-I, D-II and JOCO programs across the country. Dallas has many 1st team all-league and all-area honors the past three years on both sides of the ball.

Dallas is a force up and many coaches feel he is one of the best OT/ DE in the metro area. He was 1st Team ALL-KVL and 1st Team ALL-AREA (Cream of the Crop) Honors this past season. Other 2009 honors include: Bobby Bell Award Nominee-Metro area best DL in 4A, First team 4A All-State Offensive Lineman 2009 by two different selection committees-The Greater Kansas City Coaches Association and the Topeka Capital Journal and was also selected as 2nd Team All-Metro (selected by the Kansas City Star and Metro Sports).

Dallas will play in the Kansas All-Star Shrine Bowl Game July 31st at Pitt State University.




On Feb. 3, Bishop Ward High School senior Allison Jenicke signed to play volleyball with Allen County Community College. Allison is pictured here (front row) with her parents Stephen and Lisa Jenicke and (back row) Athletic Director Joel Heider, Allen County Community College Head Coach Jessica Peters, and Bishop Ward Head Volleyball Coach Natalie Muehlberger.

Allison Jenicke is 5’10 and Co-Captain of this year’s Varsity Volleyball team. She has played Outside Hitter for the Bishop Ward Cyclones in her three-year varsity career. Jenicke was selected to the Mo-Kan All Star volleyball team this year. She was voted to the 1st team all Kaw Valley League the past two years and was voted on the 1st team All Wyandotte County this season. She was also named to the all tournament team at Tonganoxie this year.

Jenicke has 663 career kills with 25 percent career kill efficiency. She also has 278 career blocks, which lead all Blockers. She also leads in single season serve receive with a 2.18 and leads in the career server receive with a 2.09.

“Allison has been a go-to girl all three years of her varsity career,” Bishop Ward Head Volleyball Coach Natalie Muehlberger said. “She has extensive knowledge of the game and is smart with the choices she makes when she is attacking. She has helped our team to become competitive in the post season.”



On Jan. 28, Bishop Ward High School senior Nicole Reed signed to play volleyball with Allen County Community College. Nicole Reed is 5’7 and a versatile volleyball player. She has played Outside Hitter, Defensive Specialist and Libero for the Bishop Ward Cyclones in her three-year varsity career.

She was chosen as a 1st team All Wyandotte County Selection this season. She was a Co-Captain and was voted most inspirational player by her teammates. Nicole holds the record for serving aces at Bishop Ward with 57 in a single season (2008) and 132 in her career (2007 – 2009). One of Reed’s strengths is her back row defensive play where she compiled 698 in her career.

“She plays with a lot of heart and plays with smarts; she really knows the game well,” Bishop Ward Head Volleyball Coach Natalie Muehlberger said. “Nicole is extremely unselfish—always doing what is best for the team.”



Senior Jake Kolenda signed to play baseball with Ottawa University on Jan. 20. 
Jake is pictured here (front row) with his parents, Matt '83 and Angie '85 (back row) Coach Travis Grosdidier, his brother freshman Zach, Ottawa Head Baseball Coach Joe Reed, Coach Dennis Hurla, and Coach Ryan McDaniel. 

As a junior, Jake hit 309, with nine doubles, one triple, and two home runs. He had 21 RBI’s and seven stolen bases. As a right-hand pitcher, Jake was 8-1, pitching 55.7 innings with a 3.72 ERA.

“Jake is coming into the Ottawa Baseball program from a highly recognized Kansas City area high school, Bishop Ward. He is used to top instruction and competing for Kansas State High School Athletic Association Championships perennially,” said Joe Reed, head coach of Ottawa. “Jake understands the game, knows how to play and will make a great addition to our squad."
