On-Going Activities
Student Run Business
Please stop by and show your support for the Spirit Shop – where the Holy Spirit and Cyclone spirit meet! We have a nice selection of Catholic gifts as well as the latest in athletic apparel with the Cyclone logo. The store is open before and after school or you can email aofstore@wardhigh.org to schedule an appointment. You can also learn more by visiting the Spirit Shop web page.
Entrepreneurship Class/Youth Entrepreneurs Kansas
Many of our AOF juniors are taking a year-long class in entrepreneurship. We are partnering this year with YEK and it has been a great experience. The students have been on great field trips to manufacturing facilities as well as to the K-State campus. In December they put on a Market Day where they sold their products to the student body in the cafeteria during the lunch hour. They made some money and learned a lot about the importance of the four Ps of marketing! The students are working on business plans this semester and will compete against each other, other schools in the metro area, and hopefully at the state level. Mr. Newell is looking for business partners to help with the judging, so if you’re interested contact Ross Newell at rnewell@wardhigh.org.
Upcoming Events for 2010
Leadership workshop
The AOF sophomores and juniors will participate in a leadership workshop, including mock interviews, at the Kauffman center this semester. Stay tuned for details.
Internships
We have twenty-one juniors seeking summer internships. They are well prepared and ready to work. If you know of a potential opening, please contact Cindy Heiman at cheiman@wardhigh.org.
Job Shadows
Each of the sophomore members of the Academy of Finance will completed a job shadowing experience with one or more of our business partners in the community this spring. If you are interested in partnering with us in this fun activity, please contact Cindy Heiman at cheiman@wardhigh.org.
Career Fair
The Academy of Finance will host a career fair on Friday, April 9. If you are interested in talking with students about your career please contact Lori Dowd at ldowd@wardhigh.org.
Etiquette Dinner
The juniors are invited to a formal dinner at Mrs. Heiman’s house in April to learn the finer points of dining etiquette.
This year, so far…
Freshmen Recruitment
We had an assembly to tell all the freshmen about AOF in November and followed that up with a parent meeting the evening of November 18. Twenty-five freshmen have completed the enrollment process and twelve more just need one more thing to finish up. The new class will be announced in January 2010. The new class will have a retreat at Sanctuary of Hope in February.
Finance Careers and UMKC College Visit
The AOF juniors and seniors spent November 10 at UMKC learning about finance careers and how a finance college major can open many doors. We had the pleasure of listening to Tom Bloch, the keynote speaker, a dynamic and interesting speaker. After that a variety of UMKC professors talked about the different degrees available at UMKC and the different careers for which those degrees could help prepare the students for. The presentations were followed by pizza and a great tour of the campus.
A big thank you goes out to all our business partners who helped make the day a big success.
Sophomore Dress-For-Success Seminar
The AOF sophomores learned all about dressing for success on October 13 from the staff at JC Penney's. Thanks to our Advisory Board members each student had a $30 gift card to purchase business attire clothing. The guys learned how to tie a necktie and were measured for the appropriate dress shirt size. The girls learned how to coordinate their separate pieces into a good interviewing outfit.
All AOF Lunch
On August 26 we met in the cafeteria for a back-to-school meeting and pizza lunch. It is good to be back in the swing of things.
