2009-2010 Team Takes 1st Place at State

Congratulations to the Bishop Ward Academic Decathlon team who took first place in division two at the Kansas State Academic Decathlon on Jan. 23 and 24. Division Two consists of schools with a student population of 1300 or less. They will compete at Nationals in April.
In the Varsity Division: Maria Solis placed 3rd in Essay and Economics, 2nd in Art and 1st in Interview, Math, Language and Literature, Music, Written Super Quiz and Speech.
Marla Gritzan placed 3rd in Speech and Science, 2nd in Essay, Language and Literature and Interview and 1st in Economics, Art and Music.
Rashad Singleton placed 3rd in Interview, 2nd in Speech, Math, Science, Music, Written Super Quiz and Economics, and 1st in Essay.
In the Scholastic Division: Nick Balliett placed 3rd in Interview, 2nd in Speech, Art, Written Super Quiz, Music and Math, 1st in Economics, Language and Literature and Science.
Josh Williamson placed 3rd in Language and Literature, 2nd in Essay, Music, Economics and Science, 1st in Speech and Art.
Stephanie Duenas placed 3rd in Math, Science and Art, 2nd in Interview, Language and Literature and Economics 1st in Essay, Written Super Quiz and Music.
In the Honors Division: Ellen Larson took 1st in Interview and Speech, Heather MacPherson took 3rd in Speech and 2nd in Math.

2008-2009 Team Takes 1st at State
Congratulations to the Bishop Ward Academic Decathlon team who took first place in the Division II competition on Jan. 30-31, 2009 at K State, bringing back 46 medals.
In the Varsity Division, Maria Solis took 3rd in Speech, 1st in Interview, 3rd in Math, 3rd in Fine Arts, 3rd in Social Sciences, 3rd in Music and was 1st in Individual High Score in the Varsity Division.
Nick Balliett took 2nd in Economics, 3rd in Language and Literature, 3rd in Social Science, and 2nd in Individual Super Quiz.
Josh Williamson took 2nd in Essay, 1st in Speech, 3rd in Economics, 2nd in Interview, 2nd in Math, 2nd in Fine Arts, 1st in Social Science, 2nd in Music, 3rd in Individual Super Quiz and was 2nd in the Individual High Score in the Varsity Division.
In the Scholastic Division, Anna Scott took 2nd in Essay, 3rd in Speech, 3rd in Interview, and 3rd in Social Science.
Stephanie Duenas took 1st in Essay, 3rd in Economics, 3rd in Math, 3rd in Fine Arts and 2nd in the Individual High Score in the Scholastic Division.
Rebekah Baughman took 3rd in Individual Super Quiz.
In the Honors Division, Amanda Garcia took 3rd in Speech, 2nd in Interview, 3rd in Math, 3rd in Language and Literature and 3rd Individual High Scorer in the Honors Division.
Louie Rebeck took 3rd in Social Science.
Emily Cushing took 2nd in Economics, 2nd in Math, 1st in Fine Arts, 2nd in Social Science, 1st in Music, 2nd in Individual Super Quiz and was 1st in the Honors Division Individual High Scorer. Emily was also the Bishop Ward High Scorer.

the Bishop Ward Academic Decathlon team who competed at their Regional Decathlon on Saturday. The schools they competed against were Blue Valley NW, Blue Valley W, Olathe East, Shawnee Mission East, Shawnee Mission North, Shawnee Mission NW, Shawnee Mission South, Shawnee Mission West and University Academy. Bishop Ward brought home four medals. In the Varsity Division, Maria Solis took first in Music, Josh Williamson took 3rd in Social Science, Nick Balliett took 3rd in Mathematics and Emily Cushing was the Bishop Ward High Scorer.
The team will go to the Kansas State Academic Decathlon competing with schools across the state in January.
In the Varsity Division, Ben Turkovic took first place in speech and third place in the Written test, Nick Balliett took 2nd place in the written test and 3rd place overall and Josh Williamson took 3rd place in speech, 1st place in the written test and 2nd place overall.
In the Scholastic Division, Stephanie Duenas took 1st place in speech, 2nd place in the written test and second place overall. Declan Fogarty took 3rd place in speech and 1st place in the written test and 1st place overall.
In the Honors Division, Liz Brock took 3rd place in Speech and the written test and 3rd place overall, Ellen Larson took 1st place in speech, Louie Rebeck took 2nd place in the written test and 2nd place overall and Emily Cushing took 2nd place in speech, 1st place in the written test and 1st place overall. Emily was also the Bishop Ward High Scorer.
The Academic Decathlon team will compete at the Regional Decathlon on Nov. 22nd.
The Bishop Ward Academic Decathlon team had their first competition on Thursday, Oct. 23 against Bonner High School. Bishop Ward took 23 medals.
In the Honors Division, Emily Cushing took third in the written test, Amanda Garcia took 2nd in the written test, Heather MacPherson took 3rd in Speech and 2nd overall. Freshman, Ellen Larson took 1st in the written test and Freshman, Louie Rebeck took 1st in Speech and first overall. Louie was the Bishop Ward top scorer.
In the Scholastic Division, Anna Scott took 2nd in speech and 2nd in the written test and was 1st overall. Rebekah Baughman took 1st in speech and 3rd overall. Miguel Torres took 1st in Speech and Freshman, Declan Fogarty took 3rd in speech and 2nd overall.
In the Varsity Division, Maria Solis took first in speech and first overall, Josh Williamson took 1st in the written test and 3rd in Speech and 3rd overall and Nick Balliett took 2nd in the Written test.
Eleven of the 17 member team are new to Academic Decathlon but the team is showing great promise. Our next competition will be at Bonner Springs on November 6th and the Regional Decathlon will be at Shawnee Mission East on November 22nd.
2007-2008 Team

Students from Bishop Ward High School competed at the 2008 Kansas Academic Decathlon on January 25 & 26 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Bishop Ward was the smallest school participating competing in Division Two against schools five times larger. Division Two consisted of Olathe East, Blue Valley West, Olathe Northwest, Bonner Springs, and Independence, KS.
Students were tested in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music and social sciences, which are related to this year’s theme: “the Civil War.”
In the Honors Division, Sarah Waggoner placed 2nd in Interview and 3rd in Fine Arts. Amanda Garcia placed 3rd in Impromptu and Prepared Speech, 3rd in Fine Arts and 3rd in Written Super Quiz. Amanda was the Bishop Ward high scorer.
In the Scholastic Division, Daniel Kuhn 3rd placed 3rd in the Interview and Mary Rose Scarpelli placed 3rd in the Impromptu and Prepared Speech and 2nd in Fine Arts.
In the Varsity Division, Philip Kuzila placed 3rd in Essay, 2nd in Economics, 1st in Fine Arts and 3rd in Music. Annie Breitenstein placed 3rd in Interview, 3rd in Impromptu and Prepared Speech and 2nd in Written Super Quiz. Tenille Hunter placed 2nd in the Interview. Going as an alternate, Miguel Torres placed 3rd in the Interview.
Miss Tenille Hunter was awarded the Academic Decathlon Scholarship for $500.
Congratulations to the Bishop Ward Academic Decathlon team for bringing home 18 medals from the state competition. And congratulations to Tenille Hunter for being awarded this year’s Kansas State Academic Decathlon Scholarship.
2006-2007 Team

Academic Decathlon Team Goes to Nationals
Congratulations to the 2006 Academic Decathlon team who took 4th place in the State competition on Jan. 20 & 21. Competing against schools who are seven and eight times larger than Bishop Ward, the Cyclones brought home 17 medals. In the Varsity Division, Senior Emma Rodriguez took 3rd in science. Junior Tasha Bunnell took 3rd in Fine Arts, 1st in Written Super Quiz and 3rd in Language and Literature. Freshman Liz Brock took 3rd in Essay, 3rd in the Interview, 2nd in Language and Literature, 2nd in Fine Arts, 3rd in Music, 3rd in the Written Super Quiz, and was the Varsity level high scorer. In the Scholastic Division, Sophomore Tina Gomez took 3rd in the Interview and Senior Stephanie Isom took 3rd in Speech. In the Honors Division, Sophomore Amelia Bartkoski took 1st in Interview, 3rd in Speech, and 3rd in the Written Super Quiz as an Alternate. Junior Kaycee Overcash was the Bishop Ward High Scorer. The Bishop Ward Academic Decathlon team will compete nationally in April as the Kansas representative against schools from all over the country.
In competition against Bonner Springs, Bishop Ward took first place. In the Honors Division, Sarah Waggoner took second in the written test over 9 subjects and third place overall. Lisa Bellanga took first in speech and Kaycee Overcash took third in speech. In the Scholastic Division, Tina Gomez took 2nd in the written test and third place overall, Stephanie Isom took 2nd in speech, third in the written test and first place overall. Kyle Overcash took 1st place in the written test. In the Varsity division, Emma Rodriguez took first place in speech and second place overall, Tasha Bunnell took third place in the written test and Liz Brock took second place in the written test and third place overall.
2004-2005 Team
The 2005 Academic Decathlon team took second at the State Competition at Kansas State University on January 21-22, 2005. In the Varsity division Emma Rodriguez won medals taking 1st in Speech, 1st in Interview, 3rd in Fine Arts, 1st in Math, 2nd in Essay and was 2nd in overall scores for the Varsity Division. Tasha Bunnell took 2nd in Interview, 1st in Math, 1st in Economics, 3rd in Social Science and 34d in Written Super Quiz. In the Scholastic division, Jessica Johnson took 2nd in Math and 3rd in Economics. Bridget Shomin took 2nd in Speech. Tenille Hunter took 2nd in Interview. In the Honors division, Elizabeth Bartkoski took 3rd in Speech. Sarah Waggoner took 1st in Essay. Matthew Williams took 2nd in Interview, 3rd in Math, 2nd in Social Science and 2nd in Written Super Quiz. Matthew Williams was the Bishop Ward High Scorer.

2003-2004 Team
Bishop Ward took third place in the 2004 State Academic Decathlon at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS on January 23 & 24, 2004. They competed in the Division A (schools with student populations of 1200 and below). Students compete in three categories: Honors (GPA 3.5 and above), Scholastic (GPA 3.0-3.5) and Varsity (GPA 2.99 and below). The Bishop Ward team received 22 medals in total.
Receiving medals in Honors Division were Elizabeth Bartkoski placing third in Speech and 2nd in Math and Jessica Johnson placing 2nd in both Science and Music. In the Scholastic division, Megan Baska placed 3rd in the Interview and Speech and she placed 2nd in the Essay and in Fine Arts. Courtney Meyer placed 3rd in Science and Eric Orth placed 3rd in Economics, Language & Literature, Fine Arts, and Written Super Quiz, 2nd in Science and Music and 1st in Math. Eric was the Bishop Ward High Scorer and placed third place in the entire Decathlon in Scholastic Division. In the Varsity Division, Ashley Nill took 3rd in Science, Elaine Watson took 3rd in Speech and 1st in Fine Arts, and Bridget Shomin took 2nd in Fine Arts and 1st in Language and Literature and in the Written Super Quiz.
The team consists of three members and an alternate in each division.
In honors division, Senior – Leslie Gedminas and Juniors – Elizabeth Bartkoski and Jessica Johnson.
In scholastic division, Seniors – Megan Baska, Courtney Meyer and Eric Orth and Alternate – Junior, Erica Campos.
In the varsity division, Seniors – Ashley Nill and Elaine Watson and Junior – Bridget Shomin and Alternate – Junior, Erica Mora.
