Social Studies Department Vision Statement

Through a robust and rigorous social studies education, Bishop Ward students will become civically literate and historically knowledgeable citizens. They will apply classroom concepts to their daily lives and will examine events, current and past, with the lens of the social sciences. Students will utilize content-specific vocabulary, practice document analysis techniques, and produce well-researched written responses to challenging questions. 

Goals: 

  • By graduation, students will be conversant with the basic contours of both world and American history and be able to contextualize current events in modern history. 

  • Students will understand the structure of the U.S. federal government and Kansas state government, the Constitution, and the basics of how the American political system works

  • Students will be equipped with the historical knowledge, analytical skills, and reading comprehension to be informed, active, civically literate citizens who can effectively apply their Catholic values to issues of public policy.
